Commitment to Quality

When W.K. Kellogg started to manufacture his original Corn Flakes cereal in 1906, he had one goal: to provide his consumers with high quality nutritious foods that were enjoyable to eat.

For more than 80 years Kellogg in Australia and New Zealand has remained true to this original ideal. We are committed to being an innovative company providing quality foods based on wholesome grains, nuts and fruits for a healthier world. Kellogg recognises quality as a factor critical to our success.

Quality programs and systems

Quality can be defined in many different ways. The Kellogg Company has long believed that the best definitions of quality are those that are referenced to the needs of the consumer. It is the responsibility of all Kellogg divisions and departments to ensure that rigorous company standards are achieved and maintained. This goes from Operational facilities delivering consistent, safe food; to marketing using accurate information in all communication; to quality promotional items and activities used to promote our products; to consumer services providing prompt responses; and to distribution that ensures our products arrive at their destination in the same condition in which they left the factory. In this way, consumer needs and expectations can be consistently met. A wide range of Quality Programs and Systems are employed to achieve this goal throughout our whole business.

At Kellogg, quality is everyone’s responsibility. All Kellogg employees are involved in monitoring and controlling food quality as well as improvement initiatives. These range from improving food consistency or design to meet consumers

Product quality

Consistent product quality begins with selection of the best raw materials. Kellogg works closely with suppliers in defining critical parameters for making this selection then documenting them into our specifications. Various systems are also utilised to verify that all incoming raw materials conform to Kellogg’s stringent standards.

From farm to shelf, Kellogg Quality Policies and Programs assure the safety, consistency and compliance of our products to meet the high standards of our consumers.

Within our production lines, a variety of process control methods are utilised to ensure that the manufacturing operations produce consistent foods. Foods are finally evaluated on a number of sensory indicators, including:

  • Appearance;
  • Flavour and aroma; and
  • Texture and mouthfeel.

Kellogg’s® breakfast cereals and snack foods contribute many important nutrients to the diet. Kellogg manufacturing plants have various procedures and analytical systems in place to ensure that the nutritional benefits of Kellogg’s® products are consistently delivered. Globally, Kellogg is a recognised leader in the field of cereal science and technology.

Packaging quality

Kellogg packaging materials are designed to ensure the maintenance of food nutrient levels, freshness and flavour from the manufacturing plant to the consumer. Packaging provides protection of the food through handling, shipping and storage under normal conditions. The packaging requirements of Kellogg breakfast cereals and snack foods differ according to the individual product attributes and storage conditions. Packaging is therefore selected from a wide variety of materials and sources, all carefully chosen after extensive evaluation and testing.

Most Kellogg foods are packaged in several sizes to meet different consumer preferences. These range from the smallest single serve packs or bowls to the larger ‘Family’ packs sold in supermarkets and ‘Bulk’ packs sold in the food service industry.

In the same way that the finished food is formally evaluated, Kellogg performs formalised packaging evaluations throughout production shifts.

While many packaging tests are routinely performed, there are five critical areas of packaging:

  • Correct package to food;
  • Correct application of date code, “best before” information;
  • Correct formation and closure of cartons and cases;
  • Correct sealing of liner and wrapper material;
  • Correct fill level; and
  • Attainment of stated weight

Kellogg’s® commitment to quality is second to none. In the far sighted words of our founder, W.K. Kellogg, “We are a company of dedicated people making quality products for a healthier world.”
